Size Guide and How to Measure

Preloved clothing has no consistent sizing. A US 9 from 2015 is not a US 9 from 2024, and a medium from one brand is a large from another. So we ignore labels and publish measurements instead. Here's how to use them.

How to measure shoes

Take a shoe you already own and wear comfortably. Stand a ruler against the inside of the heel and measure to the tip of the insole. That number in centimetres is what matters.

Compare it to the insole measurement on our listing. Within half a centimetre is a good fit. More than a centimetre out and it will not feel right, whatever the size label says.

Alternatively, stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark where your longest toe ends, and measure from the wall to the mark. Add roughly 0.5 cm for comfort.

How to measure trousers and jeans

Lay a pair you already own flat on the floor, buttoned and smoothed out.

  • Waist: measure straight across the top of the waistband, edge to edge. Don't double it — we publish the flat measurement.
  • Inseam: from the crotch seam straight down the inside leg to the hem.
  • Front rise: from the crotch seam up to the top of the waistband at the front.
  • Leg opening: straight across the hem.

How to measure shirts and jackets

  • Chest: lay flat, measure armpit seam to armpit seam.
  • Length: from the highest point of the shoulder straight down to the hem.
  • Shoulder: shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back.
  • Sleeve: from the shoulder seam to the cuff.

Rough shoe size conversions

US Men UK EU Insole (cm)
7 6 40 25.0
8 7 41 26.0
9 8 42.5 27.5
10 9 44 28.5
11 10 45 29.5

Treat this as a guide only. The insole measurement on the listing is always more reliable than the conversion.

Brands that run differently

  • Nike Air Force 1: runs about half a size large. Size down if between.
  • Converse Chuck Taylor: runs about half a size large.
  • New Balance 327: runs narrow. Size up for a wide foot.
  • Vans Old Skool: true to size, but the footbed is flat and narrow.
  • Vintage Levi's: older 501s run smaller than the label suggests. Go by the flat waist measurement.
