How to Clean Sneakers at Home: Leather, Suede and Canvas

A good clean can make a preloved pair look far better, and regular care helps any sneaker last longer. Here is a simple routine you can do at home with basic supplies.

What you need

  • A soft brush and an old toothbrush
  • Mild soap or shoe cleaner
  • Two clean cloths
  • A suede brush and eraser, if you own suede
  • Paper or a shoe tree for drying

Leather sneakers (Air Force 1, Jordan 1, Stan Smith styles)

  1. Remove the laces and brush off loose dirt.
  2. Mix a little mild soap in lukewarm water.
  3. Wipe the leather with a damp cloth, then scrub the midsole gently with the toothbrush.
  4. Wipe away soap with a clean damp cloth.
  5. Dry at room temperature, away from direct sun and heaters.

Suede sneakers

Keep suede dry. Brush gently in one direction with a suede brush, use a suede eraser on marks, and avoid soaking the material. Heavy stains are best left to a professional.

Canvas sneakers (Converse, Vans)

Canvas tolerates a little more water. Use a soft brush with mild soap, rinse the cloth, not the shoe, and dry fully with paper stuffed inside to keep the shape.

Things to avoid

  • Washing machines and dryers, which can damage glue and cushioning
  • Bleach and harsh household chemicals
  • Leaving wet shoes in direct sun or near a heater

Storage

Store sneakers in a cool, dry place with a little room around them. Stuffing them with paper helps them hold their shape.
